Skin Conditions & Treatment Options

Actinic Keratosis

Actinic Keratoses or Solar keratoses are skin lesions that result from prolonged sun exposure. In appearance, they are rough and scaly and often red or brown in colour. The growths can cause discomfort and, in some cases, they can develop into skin cancers, hence, their treatment is recommended.

In our clinic we offer cryotherapy, treatments with topical preparations and photodynamic therapy.

Viral Warts

Viral Warts or Verrucas are generally harmless rough, small lumps on the skin caused by human papilloma virus. Most common places for warts and verrucas are palms, fingers, knuckles and feet. In many cases they disappear on their own within two years. However, before they clear they might cause lots of discomfort and even pain.

In our clinic we offer cryotherapy and topical immunotherapy to treat the condition.

Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis or excessive, uncontrolled sweating occurs in people with overactive sweat glands in the armpits, palms of hands, feet, face or the whole body with no apparent reasons. When this condition starts affecting regular lifestyle and when it starts limiting the everyday activities one should consider a medical treatment.

In our clinic we offer injectables for auxiliary hyperhidrosis that can help to achieve very good results.

Moles

Moles are small, usually brown-coloured growths on the skin. They are often harmless and cause no discomfort. When a mole starts getting bigger, changing shape or colour it needs to be checked by a skin doctor as soon as possible. Our dermatologists offer dermoscopy service to examine skin lesion pigmentation patterns in polarized light. This examination allows to see the skin lesions at a greater depth.

If a mole is not suspicious and you would like to remove it for cosmetic purposes or if it catches on clothing or jewellery, our doctors can apply a liquid nitrogen to the area to destroy the lesions.

Keloid Scars

Keloid scar is a growth of dense fibrous tissue thats is red, brown or pale in colour. They occur as a result of abnormal process of wound healing and tend to extend beyond the boundaries of the wound affecting normal skin. They are most common on the earlobes, upper back, shoulders and chest. Keloids aren;t harmful but may cause discomfort and psychological distress.

In our clinic we treat patients with keloids by providing a course of intralesional corticosteroid injections which usually demonstrate an improvement in the appearance of keloids and their symptoms' reduction.

Seborrheic Keratosis

Seborrheic keratosis or seborrheic warts are the most common benign skin growths. They are rough or flat skin-coloured or brown lesions that can be found on any part of the body. Patients tend to remove them because of their unsightly look or if the growths catch on clothes. Some patients feel that seborrheic keratoses age their skin. If in doubt our dermatologists can examine the lesions using dermoscopy technique.

In our clinic we can perform cryotherapy to remove unsightly or catching seborrheic keratoses. We offer dermoscopy examination prior to the removal of lesions.

Alopecia or Hair Loss

There are different types of alopecia. Most common type is androgenetic alopecia or genetic type of hair loss also known as female and male pattern hair loss. Our clinic offers cutting age neuromodulator injections which helps 3 out of 4 patients.

Cambridge Dermatology Clinic also offers the latest JAK inhibitors (ritlecitinib) to treat another common type of alopecia - alopecia areata. In addition we treat frontal fibrosing alopecia.

Skin Tags

Skin Tags are small skin growths which very often are harmless and, in most cases, don't cause any discomfort. You might want to remove them for cosmetic reasons or if they bleed when/or get caught on clothing or jewellery.

In our clinic we can effectively remove any non-suspicious skin lesions by using cryotherapy. The check-up of the area and all procedures are carried out by a highly qualified dermatological medical consultant.

Basal Cell Carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer that usually develops on sun-exposed areas like the face, head, neck and hands. BCC is typically slow-growing but it can cause local damage if left untreated.

We are the only private clinic in Cambridge which offers conventional photodynamic therapy (PDT) to treat BCC. We also offer minor surgery to remove BCC under local anaesthetics.

“I developed alopecia areata & telogen effluvium after acquiring a skin infection on my neck & chin. The hair loss proceeded very rapidly from a full head of hair to the extensive patches of baldness that can be seen in the “before” photo below within the space of three months. Dr Alexandroff correctly diagnosed the condition & prescribed corticosteroid injections into the scalp along with topical dermovate to help restart hair growth. After three monthly appointments for injections my hair had almost entirely regrown, and by four months was back to its former thickness as can be seen in the “after” photo. He was knowledgeable, professional & his treatment was highly effective. He also gave the impression of taking hair complaints seriously. As such I would recommend him strongly for anybody with similar conditions."
